ING Bank Poland created a carbon footprint calculator available for businesses on the Firmove.pl website. The calculator enables comprehensive and free calculation of greenhouse gas emissions in scope 1 and 2 (under the GHG Protocol). Any business can use the tool – regardless of the scale of its business – both sole entrepreneurs, SMEs, and large companies. The free calculator is also available to businesses that are not Bank customers.
“More and more businesses are working to reduce their emissions. This is due to the growing expectations of the market, regulators, contractors, and consumers. Businesses are increasingly aware that sustainable development means environmental and social benefits and the potential for real savings – for example in energy costs, better financing conditions, or new sources of revenue. It is also an opportunity to build and strengthen competitiveness in a new field – climate competitiveness. We want to support business customers in these efforts, including providing solutions that will allow for reliable calculation of data regarding the emissions in an accessible way,” – said Ewa Łuniewska, Vice President of the Management Board at ING Bank Poland. “We provide a free carbon footprint calculator on our website Firmove.pl, one of whose goals is to support entrepreneurship and raise awareness in the ESG area. The calculator is accompanied by educational content that will be expanded on an ongoing basis,” – she added.
Calculating the carbon footprint is the first step to implementing a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Proper presentation of results converted into functional units (emissions per employee, m2, or unit of turnover value) allows planning and implementing rational actions. Completing and cataloging data on the consumption of energy, raw materials, and other resources allows not only to calculate of the carbon footprint in scopes 1 and 2 but also facilitates rational decision-making and strategic planning, which in turn may translate into cost reduction. It can also be an inspiration for the implementation of many innovations, e.g. in the field of process digitization.
The calculator is available to all businesses that want to measure their greenhouse gas emissions in scope 1 and 2. Those business owners who complete the calculator with data will receive an automatically generated report (also available for download in PDF format). In addition to the results, the report contains information on the calculation standard used, the business’s carbon footprint reduction leverage, and examples helping to understand the scale of the result obtained. Calculations are made by the GHG Protocol standard and are based on approximately 500 indicators included in the calculator, including emission indicators obtained from individual domestic suppliers of electricity and heat.
The calculator was prepared in cooperation with experts from the Climate Strategies Poland Foundation, which deals with calculating the carbon footprint of businesses and cities, decarbonization strategies, climate education, and activities for reliable information on climate change.
