A pilot implementation of generative artificial intelligence is being carried out at BNP Paribas Bank. The bank’s employees in the areas of retail and corporate banking, ESG, cybersecurity, operations, compliance, and HR already use the GENius chatbot daily. They can ask it about anything that is in the bank’s internal knowledge base. GENius provides consistent answers and indicates appropriate source documents. The application is constantly being developed. Ultimately, even several thousand employees will have access to it.

In such a large institution as a bank, information about procedures, regulations, products, and services is a huge resource of knowledge. In their scale, these documents probably equal the volume of the collections of a large library. GENius helps us find the information quickly, eliminating the need to manually search documents or ask questions to other employees. This not only saves time that can be spent, for example, on creative work but also significantly reduces the risk of errors – says Jarosław Łach, Data Tribe Leader at BNP Paribas Bank.

The bank is working on adding more areas to the internal database. In the future, these will include additional corporate and retail banking and IT processes, compliance, finance and data, contact center, and audit and risk. Full functionality will be achieved later this year, although this will not mean the end of work on GENius. The application will be constantly updated and new documents will be added to the database.

How exactly does work with a chatbot look like?

Anna Stepanów, AI & Advanced Analytics Product Owner at BNP Paribas Bank, illustrates this with an example:

– The developer can ask the GENius, for example, what security requirements they must remember when building a new application. In response, the chatbot will present security requirements and provide source documents, – says Anna Stepanów.

When asking questions, all should remember that they should be precisely formulated and accurately reflect the context of the question, just like in popular tools such as Chat GPT.

Using a chatbot not only improves communication but also provides quick access to information about procedures or processes and automates tasks. You can also ask a GENius to perform the simplest, but sometimes time-consuming tasks, such as indicating the places where the documents you are looking for are located. This will shorten the time for acquiring and exchanging knowledge, everything will be in one place, at your fingertips – says Anna Stepanów.

GENiusz is a Knowledge Chatbot application based on GenAI technology. Bank BNP Paribas is implementing it in cooperation with Accenture. The solution is part of the implementation of GObeyond Bank’s strategy for 2022-2025. One of its pillars, described by the slogan STRONGER, means strengthening business through innovative technological changes.
