A free carbon footprint calculator for companies (regardless of the scale of operations) allows businesses to estimate and generate a report of CO2 emissions. Additionally, it also allows the user to identify a way to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

Under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), large companies first, and in subsequent years also SMEs, will be obliged to report on sustainability issues, including their impact on the climate and CO2 emissions. At the same time, the pressure in the supply chain from the largest companies that require their suppliers to measure their carbon footprint means that entities that do not formally have such an obligation will need to measure their carbon footprint.

The carbon footprint calculator provided by Santander Bank Polska is a tool available to its business customers regardless of the industry in which they operate and the company’s size. The calculator allows to calculation of CO2 emissions related to the company’s activities in Scope 1, i.e. direct emissions resulting from the combustion of fuels in installations and vehicles, and Scope 2, i.e. as a result of generating energy or heat that the company consumes. After completing the emission data, business customers can create a report estimating the company’s carbon footprint. Business customers who would like to use the calculator can contact their business advisor at Santander Bank Polska.

– Unlike large corporations and developed companies, smaller and medium-sized enterprises often do not have sufficient human and financial resources to calculate their carbon intensity on their own. As a socially responsible bank, we have been supporting companies in green transformation and achieving zero emissions for years. Together with experts from the Climate Strategies Poland Foundation, we have prepared a tool that provides specific support in these processes. Thanks to the free carbon footprint calculator, we will be able to help companies reduce emissions, operate more sustainably, and meet non-financial reporting requirements – explains Lech GaÅ‚kowski, Member of the Management Board of Santander Bank Polska, head of the Business and Corporate Banking Division.

The calculator works intuitively, and to use it the customer only needs to prepare appropriate data regarding the company’s activities (including energy sources and their consumption). While completing the data, experts’ tips and comments are displayed at each stage. Additionally, articles and video materials have been prepared that explain step by step the topic of carbon footprint, the company’s emission intensity, its reduction, and compensation.

The calculation method used in the calculator is consistent with the GHG Protocol methodology – the world’s most recognized set of norms and standards used to measure greenhouse gas emissions. The carbon footprint is estimated, among others, based on standard conversion factors provided by DEFRA (UK Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture) and NIR (National Inventory Report), which are then converted into CO2 equivalent.

The bank was supported in introducing the new solution by the Climate Strategies Poland Foundation. Its experts, together with a special team within the bank, will assist corporate clients of Santander Bank Polska who use the emission calculator. The Climate Strategies Poland Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that supports companies and cities on their way to climate neutrality. The foundation deals with carbon footprint calculation, decarbonization strategies, climate education, and the fight against greenwashing and climate disinformation.
